This article is on artistic research epistemology, focusing the concept ‘epistemic things’ of Hans-Jörg Rheinberger linked to artistic research by Michael Schwab and Henk Borgdorff. The article argues that experiments are essential to artistic research, and that they should be open ended and open for the unforeseen. The unforeseen may cause the project to bifurcate, taking a second direction, and may be a source of innovation.

PhD thesis with two components: First, the Bologna process and the qualification frameworks. There is a particular discussion on the research definition that is a footnote to the Bologna qualification framework. Second, an analysis of nine doctoral theses which all have a creative practice component. The theses are from Norway, Sweden, Finland and Belgium, and the universities i question have different regulations for doctoral qualifications and approaches to doctoral research.
